Carcassonne: The Abbey And The Mayor

I’m hoping the latest video will be up by the time I’ve posted this. But if it’s not, I guess I’m giving away the secret. We’ve reviewed Carcassonne this week for our video review, and boy was it fun.
It took us nine (yes, nine) takes to get it right, but that’s mostly because it was Olivia and I’s first attempt at a review. oh what a learning experience it was.
So that said, I mentioned in the review that my personal favorite expansion to the game is the Abbey and the Mayor. Why do I like this over some of the other expansions? Here are some of my reasons:
- The Mayor Meeple: The fat pants are hilarious, and he’s bigger than the other Meeples. His presence instills fear and awe in their tiny wooden hearts.
- The Mayor’s power: Sweeping in and stealing that 40 point, eight shield city, and four other Meeples fighting it out at the last minute grows my ego just a touch. (And if you ask anyone you’ll know how much I need that.)
- Transporting the Wagon: I own the road with my wagon, it’s complete and now I own the Cloister you placed but didn’t have a Meeple to play. Thanks for the nine free points.
- Scoring Farms: The Barn is awesome. I get the farm scores now, I get my Meeples back, I get to score them again at the end of the game for more points! (Oh, and I’ve probably added four more completed cities to that farm.) I rock!
- The Mayor’s Pants: Did I mention the baggy fat pants? I feel like I’m headed to a rave with this guy. Where’s my candy necklace and my pacifier?
You’ll note I didn’t mention the Abbey tile peice in here. Personally, I don’t find it all that useful a piece and honestly, I forget to play it until the game is almost over.
I’m not saying it’s completely useless. There have been many times when it’s saved my Meeple Pig (Traders and Builders expansion) bacon. Placing it near the end in that city I haven’t quite been able to complete, or grabbing those last nine possible points by using it as a Cloister. Still, not one of the reasons I love the expansion.
That said, though. If you have the Carcassonne base set and are looking to mix up your game a bit, go grap the Abbey and Mayor expansion. It’s worth it.
In fact, if you have the base set, I’d even recommend going out and grabbing the Carcassonne Big Box and adding your set into the mix. You’ll get a much longer game play, and you get more than the stated five expansions. Definitely worth the price, and only available in limited amounts.
Have fun gaming, and don’t forget to send us your videos and pics.

I also find the Major’s pants the most amusing item in Carsassone (even more than the catapult in the last expansion). I like to call it (in spanish pants=pantalones, because I’m from Chile) "Pantalones Pantoja" it’s like calling it "Mr Smarty Pants" or something like that (really is based on Mr Pantaleón Pantoja who is a character from a Novel and also a movie)
@Daydalaus Ha. That’s hilarious. Liv and I have referred to him as Señor Pantalones as well.
