Dominon: A Video Review
By Gordon1018 at 26 April, 2009, 8:36 pm
“Thanks, mom and dad. I’ve always wanted a kingdom.”
That’s what I think of at the beginning of this game whenever I get my first cards. I feel like I was given my graduation present from my rich parents and told to go and forge my own kingdom and name for myself.
How I spend my money and resources will determine how my domain compares to that of my peers. Do I invest in monetary endeavors and hope to out buy my neighbors? Should I build the best structures and use them to further my kingdom? Which people should I surround myself with and hire in order to get ahead? Or do I take the sinister route and attack my neighbors, stealing their money, pillaging their towns and cursing their very existence?
It doesn’t matter how you play it, and I don’t claim to know the best way to win. I just know that every person that I’ve sat down and taught this game to loves it also. My 17 year old sister
loved it. My wife loves it, my mother-in-law said it was one of her favorites, and it has been one of the only games that she’s requested by name to play.
It embodies what I consider to be one of the best traits in a game. The basic rules are so simple as to not be intimidating, but the choices one gets in the game bring it a greater depth of enjoyment.
So save up your treasure, and buy some more land. After all, you’ll need somewhere to build that Chapel, house your Militia, and plant your Gardens.
The kingdom can be anything you want it to be, and every time you play, your options will be different.
This is an amazingly simple, yet deep and well-thought out game by Donald X. Vaccarino. Rio Grande games has got a winner on it’s hands, and this is sure to be a game that is played for a long time.
Show Notes:
The cards used in the opening of the games were actually Magic cards, NOT Dominion cards. As noted, no Magic cards were harmed in the creation of this video.
Brian mentioned that Dominion can be a slow learn to begin, much like Agricola can be when you start that.
Dominion is a publication of Rio Grande Games. For more information see their site.
